Hi
Well, summer has kept me busy. I have sure been slacking on
my Newsletter! I swear that I do not know where the hours, days and
weeks go! Today consisted of making fig jam, laundry and now 30 minutes
to spend catching you up before heading out to dance.
Palm Springs Summer Dance Camp was a blast, Joe took 1st Place in the
Jack and Jill Night Club and I made finals in the Country Two Step Jack
and Jill. We taught two great Country Two Step Classes and danced until
the wee hours. I am so pleased to say that after a weeks worth of
dancing, I am none worse for the wear. My feet were totally swollen by
the end of the weekend but have returned to their "normal" shape and
size. It has been 4 1/2 months since the Cipro Poisoning and
I am finally seeing a bit of an improvement. Unfortunately another
dancer that has also been affected is not quite so lucky. Georgia re-tore her calf while dancing in
Palm Springs........hope you are feeling better.........and
dancers, please take this warning seriously, Cipro is dangerous!
For those of you in the southern Ca. area interested in Hustle, Debra Hampton will be
teaching at Lisa Fey's Studio on Saturday,
September 18th.
We are headed to San Jose next week for the South
Bay Dance Fling. Anyone else going? From what I understand it
is a great Country Dance Event, so if you enjoy doing the Waltz, East
and West Coast Swing, Cha Cha, Triple Two, Polka, Country Two Step and
Night Club Two Step come on out and join us, Country Events offer a
great variety of music so you can dance many different dances!
For those of you joining us on our cruise, here is the hotel information. I
will be sending out information on your e-docs for the cruise and a
list of everything you need to bring , later this week. If anyone else
is interested in joining us, I can check price and
availability........no guarantees!
If you are a beginning dancer, or
someone that really wants to take their dancing to a higher level, then
this site is for you! Remember, Members
have access to EVERYTHING that we do! All dances are broken
down, step by step,
available to you whenever you want to practice. I know how frustrating
it can be to try and remember what you learned in dance class, go home
and want to practice and then find out a week later that you have
practiced it all wrong! Don't let that happen to you! You can now download and view Night Club and Country Two Step to your computer
and watch them full screen. West Coast Swing is coming soon!
Tuesday Night Class Videos, Wednesday Night Class Videos, The Ballroom Workshop Re-Caps, and
The Borderline Re-Caps.
Hope all is well and sunny in your worlds.
Happy Dancing,
Michele

Quick Dance Shoe Fix
Have you ever been out dancing and the suede bottom
of your shoe, usually the toe or heel, starts to peel away from your
shoe causing it to flap around or get folded up into a lump? I might be
harder on my dance shoes and boots than most dancers', because it seems
to happen to me quite often. The quickest and easiest way that I have
found to adhere the sole back onto the shoe is Super Glue. A little dab
will do ya'! Just put a drop or two on the sole of your shoe and press
firmly. It works great, you should always have a tube or two in your
dance bag.

Dancing Balanced
by Michele
Rasmussen
Dancing is a recreation that brings joy to people of all
ages. It can be a bit overwhelming and difficult at first, but the more
you practice, the better you become, the more fun you will have. There
are many elements encompassed in dancing. There are skills to becoming
a great leader and follower as well as skills that both leaders and
followers must achieve themselves, individually. One of these skills
that must be achieved individually is balance.
Good, solid balance is essential for both the leader and
follower. Neither person should rely upon the other for their own
balance. Each dancer must be in control of their own body and movement.
Maintaining your balance may become particularly troublesome while
turning. Dancers often experience their partner depending upon them to
regain their balance while turning or coming out of a turn. A dancer
must never depend upon the non-turning partner for their own balance
while they are turning or lean heavily upon them when finishing a turn.
You can shorten this learning process by practicing turning on your
own, without your partner. Be sure to practice turning in both
directions.
Another good exercise is is to stand with your feet
shoulder width apart. Raise your arms as though carrying a tray. Raise
one leg at a time, knee parallel to the ceiling and point your toe.
Hold for ten seconds and then change legs. Repeat this exercise, five
times for each leg several times a day. Once you have become proficient
and found your balance and are able to stand firmly without swaying or
putting your raised foot down, try the same exercise with your eyes
close.
When attempting to do this exercise with your eyes
closed, try it first with your hands either against a wall or on the
back of a chair for safety, as this can be extremely
difficult. Once you have a strong sense of your own balance
while standing still, you should begin to start moving/dancing/walking
around, periodically stopping on one foot or the other, perfectly
balanced and in control of your body.
Another exercise that will help your balance and also
flexibility, is to stand on one leg while holding your other foot back
behind your buttocks with your hand. To do this, you should stretch
first and then bend your leg and grab your foot with your hand. You
might also hold onto the back of a chair with your other hand until you
are comfortable and well enough balanced to do this exercise free
standing. Either of these exercises can be done just about anywhere.
Yes, people in the grocery line may think you are nuts, but
honestly.........do you care??
Once you have perfected standing solidly on one leg,
practice your turns in both directions. Practice your chaine' turns, your pivots turns and even turning or
spinning on one foot. Balance is something that every dancer must
possess and can only be achieved and accomplished by practicing on
their own. Of course, there are those of you that are blessed and born
with perfect balance, but for those us who are not, it is an essential
element to acquire to become a terrific dancer.
