Hi,

Hope everyone had a Happy Dancing Valentine's Day! I know that we have been busy with dance classes, private lessons and workshops. I am sure hoping that all of this repetition and practicing is starting to sink in to this uncoordinated body of mine! I think that the reason we went to see Shen Yun, was that Joe was so hoping some of their amazing grace and elegance would miraculously enter into my body!

For those of you that are brand new dancers, hang in there! Dancing is the hardest thing I have ever learned to do, but by far the most enjoyable! It does get easier, I promise.

Happy Dancing,

Tip Of The Week
When Dancing, Keep Your Head Up!

Where do I look when I am dancing? When you are dancing it is important for you to keep your head up and not look down at your feet. There are many reasons for this, but how about we just start with the most important one. We need to see where we are going, or where we are leading our follower to go. If we are looking at our feet, since our heads are heavy, we will be off balance and your partner may wonder just what it is that you are looking at!

             Not so good.            Lovely

How Do I Know When to Start Dancing?
                                                                    by Michele Rasmussen

You should  begin to dance on the first beat of the music. The first beat of music will frequently be the strongest accent in a rhythmic cycle. A singer will often begin singing on the first beat, or the "one" of a phrase. Listen for the beat that has a greater intensity or volume than the others.

  • a beat is the basic time unit of a piece of music.
  • the rhythm of a song is made up of a sequence of beats.
  • the tempo is the speed at which the beats occur.
Hearing the one of a phrase can be difficult, but with practice it becomes easier. Listen for the beat when you are driving in the car. Tap your thumb on the steering wheel. Once you begin to hear the "one", you should start paying attention to the rhythm of the music so that you can determine just which dance you should be dancing.

This song has a very strong "one". See if you can find the beat in the following video of Sex Bomb by Tom Jones (listen for '1-2-3-cha-cha' and 'slow -- quick-quick -- slow':

While this may be challenging for some, it is essential. It will become easier the more you listen to music.

Here are a few examples of songs and which dance you might dance to them.
